I was asked to design for Garland Civic Theater again for their production of The 39 Steps. It is a play with only four actors and a minimalist set of a stage, two box seats, and a back wall with a few props to indicate scene changes.
A fake proscenium arch and wall were built in front of the real thing in the theater and two rounded box seats were added on either side. Most of the decoration was painted in, reminiscent of a pre-civil war era theater design. I created my own can lights and the floor was painted to look like a stage on a stage. The "back wall" of the theater was also fake, the brick look achieved with insulation foam, acetone, and layered painting techniques.
In addition to set design and painting, I also worked on some props for the show including the steamer trunks, fireplace, various signs, puppets, and the two prop planes featured in the airplane chase scene.
