This body of work, a series of watercolors titled A Relational Self Portrait, stems from the death of my grandmother. Playing with the definitions of “relation,” both in family and relational identity, I crafted a portrait of myself through images of my family. Relational identity is a theory that individuals are influenced and formed by their surroundings and the people with whom they interact. In the beginning, I created paintings of my grandmother to feel closer to her but discovered an intense interest in our shared family history and how it has shaped us. Using old photo albums, I constructed a series that represents myself through images of relatives.
